Our History
GrundifiedZX was founded in 2005 by a group of four dedicated corporate attorneys who recognized a significant gap in the Canadian legal market. After years of working at large law firms where client relationships were often secondary to billable hours, founders Margaret Lawson, Daniel Chen, Robert Harrison, and Elena Kowalski envisioned a different approach to corporate legal services.
The firm began as a small practice in a modest office on Bank Street in Ottawa, focusing primarily on supporting local technology startups with their incorporation and early funding rounds. Within three years, our reputation for providing practical, business-focused legal advice had grown substantially, allowing us to expand our team and move to our current location on Elgin Street.
In 2010, we expanded our practice areas to include comprehensive corporate structuring services for mid-sized businesses and investment protection for angel investors and venture capital firms. This strategic expansion coincided with Ottawa's emerging status as a technology hub, positioning GrundifiedZX at the center of the region's business growth.
The 2015 addition of our cross-border practice group, which specializes in helping Canadian businesses expand into the U.S. market and American companies establish Canadian operations, marked another significant milestone in our development. Today, GrundifiedZX employs 25 legal professionals and has been recognized as one of Canada's leading boutique corporate law firms, maintaining our founding commitment to personalized service while offering sophisticated legal expertise.

Margaret Lawson
Managing Partner
Margaret brings over 25 years of corporate law experience to her role as Managing Partner. A former M&A specialist at a global law firm, she leads our strategic initiatives while maintaining an active practice focused on complex corporate transactions. Margaret holds a J.D. from University of Toronto and an MBA from Queen's University.
Daniel Chen
Head of Corporate Structuring
Daniel leads our Corporate Structuring practice, specializing in optimizing business structures for tax efficiency and risk management. Before co-founding GrundifiedZX, he served as tax counsel for several multinational corporations. Daniel holds an LL.M. in Taxation from Osgoode Hall Law School and is a frequent speaker on corporate governance topics.
Elena Kowalski
Head of Startup Practice
Elena oversees our dedicated Startup Practice, drawing on her experience as both a corporate attorney and a former tech entrepreneur. Her unique perspective enables her to provide practical, growth-oriented legal advice to emerging companies. Elena holds a J.D. from McGill University and serves on the board of several technology incubators.
Robert Harrison
Head of Investment Protection
Robert specializes in representing investors in private equity and venture capital transactions. With a background in securities law and financial regulation, he helps investors structure deals that protect their interests while supporting company growth. Robert holds a J.D. from Dalhousie University and previously worked at the Ontario Securities Commission.
